This might get kinda long since I haven't gotten on here since last Thursday, but so much has happened. Where did I leave off?
Thursday: A tire blew on 1 of the trailers carrying a combine, it took about 2 hours to get the necessary parts, fix it, and get rolling again. Because of that delay, we had to stop in Kingfisher, OK for the night when it got dark, about 3 hours from our destination. 2 guys had gone ahead to get the camper setup and then to go back to Enid, OK to get our double header trailer. so the other 7 of us stayed in a cheap hotel for the night.
Friday: Up early to get everything checked over and rolling by 7. There are a lot of creeks down here, not many rivers; but we saw "creeks" bigger than Cannon River, so it is kinda goofy. We got to travel on part of historic Route 66, don't know if anyone knows about it's history with the Great Depression but the book "Grapes of Wrath" describes it pretty good and makes a person thankful for all they have. Someday I want to travel all of it. Some of the really little towns we are traveling through and are combining close to look like they were left during the great depression and have just been sitting there ever since. with some newer buildings, but lots of abandoned buildings still up. I think there are some pretty poor areas in southern OK here by the looks of some of the houses. they wouldn't stand up to a MN winter. then there are the very rich in the oil industry, lots of oil wells down here, sure wouldn't mind to own 1 of those! We pulled into Ryan, OK around 11:00, found out where to unload the machinery and set to it. With the 9 of us it took about 2 hours to get everything unloaded from the semis and ready to go. the mid-day heat of 103 (plus humidity - what the heck?!) had everyone soaked through with sweat, even our jeans. it was brutal, but we worked fast to get it done. We have a hard-working crew, and no complaining even, no one had enough energy for extra talking. The combines headed directly to the field, Ben & I went to grab some sandwich meat and gatorades. Ben was 1 of the guys that brought the camper down, so we headed there to hook stuff up, but he spotted a RV park closer so we moved it there. It was only about 10 minutes from the field, the other place was almost 1/2 an hour away, that will save a lot of time and unnecessary fuel used. I am not familiar with getting a camper all set up, but Ben & I figured it out quickly and will be pros at it by the end of summer!
Wheat country! But our first stop is Ryan, OK - right on the Texas border. only a small pocket of wheat there, and we are doing all of it by that town :)
